Good Morning and welcome to another edition of “Wake Up With Whitty”, where I cover a broad range of topics from the week that’s passed. Let’s face it, nobody wants to process their own thoughts this early in the morning, so let me do the thinking for you. And if you want to come back after you’ve had your coffee and let me know why I’m an idiot, feel free to do so!
Tom Brady’s Fancy New Car
— Aston Martin (@astonmartin) May 19, 2017
Aston Martin announced this week that Tom Brady just signed a new endorsement contract with the English auto maker. I had every intention of going out and buying an Aston Martin this weekend too, but I’m no longer interested after this news. I’ll just stick with my Ford Fusion instead. On the bright side, I don’t have to take out a second mortgage on my house and my daughter may still get to go to college one day.
As part of the deal, Tom Brady will get to design his own version of the 2018 Aston Martin Vanquish S. Kind of a risky move letting a guy who, according to his wife, has had multiple concussions design a car, in my opinion. I’m willing to bet that tire pressure sensors aren’t going to be included in Tom’s version of the Aston Martin Vanguish. It’s great to see Brady land this endorsement deal though, the guy definitely needed to catch a break sometime.
NBA Playoff Intrigue
Having myself watched a total of 0 minutes playoff basketball so far this year, I have to say it’s been an exciting playoffs full of uncertainty and intrigue. Soothsayer and fellow Milliron Sports blogger DB is starting to look like a genius with his bold prediction of a Cavs/Warriors finals. The fact that neither team has lost a playoff game yet this year is a bit ridiculous. I’m going to go out on a limb and make a bold prediction of my own: at least one of those two teams will lose at some point during the 2017 NBA playoffs. You can put money on that.
Reds Roller Coaster
Well the Reds are back to being hard to watch as they’ve now lost 7 straight games. They’re now just a game and a half ahead of the last place Pirates. They’ve not been playing well at all since heading out west to San Francisco (let’s blame the 17-inning affair!) but I’m hoping they can get it turned around this weekend. Interestingly enough, the Brewers, who not long ago occupied last place in the division, are now sitting in 1st place. This has been quite the whirlwind season in the NL Central so far, which gives me hope that maybe the Reds can stay in the thick of things late in the season.
Rock on the Range
Switching gears from sports slightly, this weekend is the 10th annual Rock on the Range festival in Columbus, OH. Taking place each year in May, Rock on the Range is one of the biggest rock and heavy metal festivals in the country. The rock community was shocked earlier this week by the death of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who was found dead following a show on Wednesday night. The band, who was scheduled to headline Friday night at Rock on the Range, had to cancel its appearance in wake of the tragic news. In their place was a touching tribute to Cornell showcasing all of his various projects from his career.
I have attended Rock on the Range several times myself, and was actually really excited about this year’s lineup. Metallica, one of my favorite bands of all time, is headlining on Sunday and I was really hoping to be able to go. Unfortunately due to the way Rock on the Range now handles its ticket sales, getting a ticket to one single day of the concert is virtually impossible. They’ve completely done away with single day ticket sales, and have replaced paper tickets with electronic bracelets that can only be used by the original owner. It more or less kills the secondary market and hurts casual fans or people who just don’t have the time or money to attend all 3 days of the festival. Obviously it isn’t negatively impacting them as tickets were completely sold in in no time flat, and their ultimate goal is to make money, so I can’t fault them for that. I was just disappointed by the new ticket policy.
