Good morning and welcome to another edition of Wake Up With Whitty. I know you don’t want to process your own thoughts this early in the morning, so let me do the thinking for you. Then once the sugar kicks in from your morning donuts and you’ve woken up a bit, feel free to come back and tell me what you really think.
NBA Finals Update
We’re one game into the NBA finals and the Warriors currently hold an almost-insurmountable 1-0 lead over the Cavs. At this point I am just about ready to call it a series because Golden State just has way too much firepower for Lebron and Company to handle. They just have no answer for the Warriors and their offensive prowess. There is still one intriguing aspect left in the NBA finals though.
The story of this series is easily the fact that Kevin Durant and Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay dated while the two were in college. They decided to go their separate ways after leaving the University of Texas. Rachel went off to law school at Marquette and is now breaking down barriers as the first minority Bachelorette. Kevin went off to Seattle to play professional basketball for some team that doesn’t even exist anymore and now he’s riding Steph Curry’s coat tails with Golden State. It’s obvious which of the two are doing better in life. Durant is probably kicking himself for not making that relationship work.
Previously I had predicted that the Warriors beat the Cavs in 6 games. I’d like to update my bold prediction though: fresh off of a 4-game sweep of the Cavs, Durant makes a surprise appearance on The Bachelorette and the two rekindle the old flame and live happily ever after.
Dat Dude Returns to GABP
Last night marked the first time Brandon Phillips returned to Great American Ball Park since being traded to Atlanta in the offseason. I enjoyed seeing BP back at GABP. He was always a fan favorite here in Cincinnati and the crowd gave him a well-deserved standing ovation prior to his first at bat. While I didn’t like to see him go, it was definitely time for the organization to move on. The Reds are in rebuild mode and needed to see what younger players like Peraza had to offer. The whole situation clearly rubbed Philips the wrong way though.
Dat Dude declined any pre- or post-game ceremonies from the Reds, but he did speak to the media briefly beforehand. I can see where he’s coming from when he said seeing someone else in his #4 was a slap in the face. He may never surpass Joe Morgan on the list of greatest Reds second basemen, but he’s definitely the Joe Morgan of this generation. He was an iconic player and a staple within the community. But he’s gone now, and it’s time to move on.
Phillips was largely ineffective in his return to Cincinnati. He was 0-5 with two strikeouts at the plate. The Reds earned the victory with an extra-inning walk off homerun by Mesoraco. While I love Dat Dude, I definitely hope that trend continues through the weekend.
Match Made in Heaven?
Some foods just go perfectly together. Peanut butter and jelly. Bacon and eggs. Grilled cheese and tomato soup. Ice cream and craft beer???
If you read any of my American Craft Beer Week series you’d know I’m a big fan of craft beer. I’m also a fan of ice cream, but never in a million years would I think he two would go well together. So when I heard that local brewery Rhinegeist was collaborating with United Dairy Farmers to make an IPA-infused ice cream, I was a little skeptical, but I had to try it. I was actually pleasantly surprised by Tropical Truth. I’m usually not a huge fan of fruity ice cream, but the subtle mango and grapefruit flavors pair well with the hop flavors here. Nothing was too strong or overpowering, so I actually really enjoyed this. I did feel a little bit odd being ID’ed to buy ice cream though. If you’re in the Cincinnati area I would definitely recommend giving it a try.
Yesterday was National Donut Day. I hope you celebrated accordingly. If not, I’m giving you permission to extend the celebration through the weekend. Go grab a few of your favorite donuts and check out DB’s Simpsons reviews:
