We’re still a few months away from the beginning of the NFL season, but ESPN got the sports world talking about their flagship NFL program, Monday Night Football in the early days of June with today’s big news. I guess when the NBA is taking a six week break between NBA Finals games and you don’t hold the rights to the NHL Stanley Cup Final, you have to make news somehow. Must not be much happening in the Tebow Baseball Universe.
Hank Williams Jr.’s “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” was used as the Monday Night Football intro song since 1989 in one form or another until his controversial remarks about then-President Obama led to his removal from ESPN programming. I’m happy to see it’s return and always questioned their decision to remove the song despite the controversial stance taken by the country music star. Politics aside, the song is iconic and MNF just hasn’t seemed the same since it’s been gone.
Between Sunday Night Football and Monday Night Football, we have some quality (for different reasons.. sup Carrie Underwood) intro songs to look forward to. I just hope they don’t screw it up by trying to incorporate some current “country” acts to cater to the younger crowd who don’t understand the cultural importance of Hank Williams Jr.’s weekly task of getting us ready for some football.
While we wait for the first Monday Night Football game of the season on September 11th, enjoy this compilation of previous intros from Bocephus himself.
