Last week, I complained about the dreaded summer sports lull that we were headed into, and BAM! The NBA came running to save the day with crazy trade rumors all leading up to tonight’s draft. I think the first couple of picks are locked in, but after that, we could be in for quite an entertaining night of trades. Let’s take a look back on the week’s rumors and look forward to what’s going to happen tonight:
The big-name rumors surrounded Paul George of the Indiana Pacers saying that he planned on signing with a different team in free agency after his contract was up at the end of next season. Apparently, he’s said that he wants to play for the Lakers next season, but Indiana is obviously going to try and get the most from a trade from anyone, not just LA. The pacers were believed to be talking to the Lakers, Clippers and Cavaliers about possible trade options for PG13
Once the Cavaliers got in the mix of trade talks, all of the sudden, unstable owner Dan Gilbert fired the GM that assembled the team that took them to 3 straight NBA Finals appearances. There were rumblings that Cavs players were warning Paul George to stay away from the toxic atmosphere of the Cavaliers front office while LeBron figures out what the next move is for the organization. It’s looking like former Piston Chauncey Billups could be taking over the helm as Cavs GM.
Then we come to Jimmy Butler and the Bulls. The Bulls were trying to move Butler to the Cavs or Celtics for draft picks and other assets. I think Butler would be a good fit in either of those two cities, and just when we thought he may be going to Boston, Danny Ainge pulled the rug out from under everyone, and traded the first pick in the draft to Philadelphia.
Then we come back to the Lakers. They currently have the #2 overall pick, and that wasn’t on the table when discussing Paul George. The Lakers said that anyone but the 2nd pick and Brandon Ingram was up for grabs. Looking to dump the ridiculous salary of Timofey Mozgov or Luol Deng, they found a taker in the Brooklyn Nets. The Lakers got one of the Lopez brothers (the good one without the crazy hair) and a late first round pick in exchange for Mozgov and that snitch D’angelo Russell.
In all seriousness, I wish Russell well. I think he’s going to be a good ball player, and this solidifies in my mind that the Lakers will be taking Lonzo Ball with the 2nd pick to replace D-Lo.
Now lets get to that dumpster fire that is the NY Knicks. I don’t know if Phil Jackson is the Zen Master anymore. In the front office for the Knicks, he’s been a complete disaster. He’s now saying that Porzingis, the only player worth a shit on the Knicks, is up for grabs if the right offer comes in. Every Knicks fan hated the PorzinGOD pick on draft night 2015, but came around to loving his style of play. He’s going to be a legit superstar.
All of this happened, and I didn’t even mention Dwight Howard being traded for a washer and dryer from Charlotte. This will be Howards 4th new team since leaving the Magic 4 years ago. At some point it’s a “you” problem, not a “they” problem. Maybe Michael Jordan can whip him into shape. I’m sure that’ll go well.
All in all, I’ve been thoroughly entertained all week with this stuff. Strap in, tonight should be just as interesting with the 2017 Draft coming in HOT.
