Welcome to another edition of Wake Up With Whitty. Today the Milliron Sports crew is en route to Athens, OH for Ohio Brew Week (check it out at http://www.ohiobrewweek.com). Ohio’s premier craft breweries are taking over the bars in uptown Athens. If you’re in the area tonight, be sure to look out for DB, Jefe, Mac and myself. We’ll be the four overweight dudes in our early 30’s trying to hang with a bunch of college kids. And if you’re not in the area, then you’ll have plenty of time to read Wake Up With Whitty and leave a comment to let me know what you think.
Mayweather McGregor Media Circus
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock lately then you’re well aware of the upcoming Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match. For the longest time it didn’t seem like it was going to happen, but ever since it was officially announced the hype machine has been in full effect. McGregor and Mayweather are probably the two best trash-talkers in their respective sports, so you knew going in that any press conference was going to be entertaining, but I don’t know if anybody could have anticipated the ridiculousness of the 4-city media circus that ensued.
This whole thing has had a WWE feel to it. The fighters have yet to step into the ring together but that hasn’t stopped them from exchanging a slew of verbal jabs. It’s been pretty entertaining for the most part, although some of it seems a bit forced, almost like it’s scripted. Some people may be turned off the the spectacle of it all, but I think for the most part it’s accomplished what they set out to do: get people talking and drum up more interest in the fight.
After four rounds I have McGregor ahead in the world press tour, 39-36. McGregor is just so quick with the comebacks, he had Mayweather on his toes the whole way through. Plus anything is funnier when you add an Irish accent. Floyd also gets docked a point for his homophobic slur he dropped in the last tour stop (do you even PC bro?). The fight itself is probably going to be a different story. I just don’t think McGregor can hang with Mayweather in the boxing ring. They’ve already alluded to a potential rematch in the Octagon. If that happens I think McGregor destroys Mayweather. I’m interested to see what they come up with for the rubber match.
Big Baller Burn
Shots fired. JJ Watt is throwing some shade at business mogul and media superstar Lavar Ball. Watt tweeted an advertisement for his new shoes, claiming they’re $400 cheaper and 100% more effective than some shoes on the market, a clear shot at the Big Baller Brand. Uhhh, hey JJ…maybe instead of subtweeting some kid’s dad about how you think his shoes are trash you could focus on bringing some positivity into the world and try and make it a better place. But if talking shit about somebody else’s shoes or making fun of an opposing teams quarterback because of his hair color (#neverforget) makes you feel like a bigger man, than so be it. I’m sorry you’re not a big baller, so you clearly don’t get it. Why don’t you just stick to football? (Side note: I’m not a big baller either, I get pissed if I have to pay more than $60 for a pair of shoes).
Cozart Gets His Donkey
I’m still not exactly sure what gave him the idea. I know it came to him during spring training when the teammates were visiting a nearby donkey farm. But it looks like Joey Votto is coming through on his promise on getting Cozart a donkey for making the All Star Game. It’s refreshing to see an athlete finally come through on a promise to buy livestock for his teammates. So often nowadays guys make these empty promises and never follow through. Good for you Joey. Not sure what Cozart is going to do with the donkey, but he definitely earned it. This is what I love about the Reds. Even if they’re not the most competitive team, they’re fun to watch. It makes a losing season more bearable.
