Welcome to another edition of Wake Up With Whitty. August is now upon us as football season is less than a month away. The NFL preseason kicked off earlier this week with the Cowboys beating the Cardinals in the Hall of Fame game (glad to see they got their field paint situation sorted out) and the college football season gets started in just 3 short weeks. So sit tight folks, pretty soon you’ll have another reason to get out of bed on the weekends besides some blogger’s weekly posts about nothing. But for now, you’re stuck with me, so sit back, relax and enjoy.
WNBA Live 18
EA Sports has announced that WNBA players will be included in this year’s edition of NBA Live. The WNBA players and teams will only be in exhibition mode initially, and you’ll only be able to match the WNBA teams against each other in the new game mode. That means we’ll have to wait even longer for the Los Angeles Sparks/Golden State Warriors dream matchup. I wouldn’t be surprised if the use of WNBA players and teams is expanded to other game modes in future releases though.
I think this is actually a pretty cool idea. I’m not sure how much of a market there would be for a standalone WNBA game, but EA Sports is on the right track incorporating it into their existing basketball game. It’s definitely going to introduce more consumers to the franchise and open up more opportunities for fans to get involved in the game. I always like when games introduce new teams/leagues. I loved when ECHL teams were added to the NHL games because it meant I could play with the Cincinnati Cyclones (until I lost interest after a week or two…). I just can’t wait until next year when they introduce a new game mode where you get to beat Lavar Ball one-on-one with each of the WNBA players. I bet he’ll love that.
From Buckets to Bogeys
Steph Curry decided to show the world that he’s good at more than just shooting threes, mocking Lebron and crashing college house parties. Curry hit the links in the Ellie Mae Classic this week. While he didn’t make the cut of the Web.com Tour event, he did post a respectable 74 on both Thursday and Friday, finishing 8 over par for the tournament.
If you’ve listened to the first episode of The Nati Boys podcast then you know that I’m a firm believer that if I put enough time into golf, I think I could be decent enough to make a splash on the Web.com Tour. But just for comparison’s sake, I’d be lucky to shoot 74 on 9 holes right now, and Steph, who probably plays from time to time but obviously isn’t 100% devoted to the game of golf, is able to pick up and post 74’s on back to back days in a professional golf tournament. I do think I could take him if I train a little bit though. And if we were playing putt putt instead of real golf. And he used his weak hand and spotted me a stroke a hole. So Steph, if you’re reading this, you’re officially being called out. Hit me up on Twitter for details. Unless you’re too scared…
Thinks are looking bleak right now in Miami with Ryan Tannehill going down with a knee injury during training camp. The team still doesn’t know how long they will be without their starting quarterback. One option is 6-8 weeks of rest and rehab to see if he is able to heal on his own. Another option is to have surgery on the knee, which would likely mean his season would be done. It’s a tough break for a Dolphins team that was coming off of a pretty good 2016 campaign.
While Tannehill’s immediate future remains uncertain, the team is currently exploring all options. It sounds like the leader in the clubhouse right now is Jay Cutler, and I couldn’t think of a better fit. Cutler’s bright, bubbly personality is a perfect match for the sunshine and party atmosphere of the city of Miami. Colin Kaepernick is another options that the Dolphins may explore. Personally, I’m hoping the Bengals somehow get in the mix and manage to trade AJ McCarron to Miami, if for no other reason than to shut up the people here in Cincinnati that somehow think McCarron gives the Bengals a better chance to win than Dalton (spoiler alert: he doesn’t). We’ll see how things shake out in Miami, but right now it’s aren’t looking too positive.
