I know the week isn’t quite over yet, but I’m ready to call the fight in the race of this week’s Dick of the Week. It was shaping up to be a pretty tight race. There was a marathon runner in Slovakia. There was that asshole that cut me off on my way home from work yesterday (I know you fucking saw me when you merged into my lane, jerk!). There was a certain Yankee’s catcher whose package was getting quite a bit of attention last night. And of course there was perennial DotW contender, Jefe. Then along comes Cam Newton and makes my decision much, much easier. It’s only Hump Day but Cam Newton has the Milliron Sports Dick of the Week locked up.
So what did Cam do that earned him this great honor? Oh, just reacted in a blatantly sexist way to a legitimate question from a female reporter. When Panthers beat writer Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton a question about receiver Devin Funchess and the physicality of his route running, Cam replied by laughing and saying that it was “funny to hear a female talk about routes.” Yikes. He then went on to answer the question as if nothing happened. I have no doubt Cam’s spoken to countless female reporters during his time as a star quarterback, most of whom probably asked him perfectly legitimate questions about the sport of football, so I’m not really sure what he was thinking here. Maybe he had a mental lapse and thought he was still in the friendly confines of the locker room? Maybe he was living one of my worst fears: accidentally saying the most inappropriate thing that pops into your head at the absolute worst time (I don’t know how many times I had to fight the urge to drop a random f-bomb in the middle of a meeting). It may have just been an ill-advised attempt at a joke, but his tone didn’t really make it sound like he was joking, it just made him sound like an arrogant prick. You know what I think is funny? Hearing a QB who isn’t even in the top 20 in passer rating this year talk about anything.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Cam Newton deserves to be crucified for this. I don’t think this makes him a bad person. I’m not even sure that he’s some chauvinist, sexist prick who has no respect for women. I think it just means that, in this particular moment, Cam was a dick. He’s a been a dick before. He’ll probably be a dick again. What he said was inappropriate and uncalled for, but I imagine this will blow over sooner or later. Maybe just think twice next time that inappropriate comment pops into your head. And when in doubt, just remember: “Don’t be a dick!”
