Your #12 Cincinnati Bearcats tip off Friday at noon against NCAA powerhouse Savannah State. The boys are looking good from what I’ve seen of the Red and Black scrimmage, and the two exhibition blowouts. This is going to be Mick’s best team, with the addition of Cane Broome, and the return of Cumberland, Evans, Gary Clark (problem), and lefty post specialist Kyle Washington. I’m going to argue that Cumberland and Evans are NBA bound, possibly after this season. I can’t blame them; if they have spectacular seasons, make that money while you can.
With the new season starting up, here’s a look back at last years highlights:
The PG leader Troy Caupain graduated this past year, and is currently in the NBA G League trying to make it onto the Orlando Magic’s roster. I loved Caupain here at UC, but don’t see him making it to the NBA; prove me wrong, Troy. One of the most memorable plays from his career with the Bearcats was a buzzer-beater to tie up an NCAA tournament game with Purdue. The Cats would go on to win this game.
This season, I’m really looking for sophomore G Jarron Cumberland to step up and be the leading scorer on this team. He was timid at times on the court last year, and wouldn’t shoot wide open shots when he had the look; hopefully, he’ll be lighting it up without hesitation this year.
I’m also looking for Jacob Evans to be the man on this squad. As I mentioned earlier, if he has a successful Junior season, I can definitely see him leaving to go to the NBA. I don’t know if he’d be a lottery pick just yet, but I definitely see potential.
The Bearcats will be playing their home games on NKU’s campus this year as 5th/3rd Arena gets a much needed renovation. They have sold out most of their games in the smaller BBNT arena. Scheduling decent opponents has been a problem of late, but with the addition of Wichita State to the AAC, hopefully we’ll see a tick up in better opponents. The Home and Home with UCLA is a great addition, and OSU will be coming to town at the beginning of the 2018 season. I hope that trend continues.
This years highlight games are against UCLA (although, LiAngelo Ball may be in a Chinese prison for this game), Florida, Mississippi State, and of course, Crosstown Shootout rival Xavier. I also look for the American to be better this year, with the addition of Wichita State, SMU still having a decent squad, and UConn improving.
Alright, I’m officially pumped for Bearcat basketball!!
With all of these Bearcats highlights, it’s hard for me to not include a video of my favorite Cincinnati basketball player of all-time, the great Kenyon Martin. I went and saw him play with in Ice Cube’s Big 3 league over the summer; he’s looking good for 40.
Also, after seeing this highlight, it’s hard to not hope that Kenyon Martin Jr. is thinking about coming to UC. Dunkin’ like his daddy.
