Mac’s Cincinnati Reds Throwback Uniform Series: 1911 Edition

Throughout the 2019 season, the Cincinnati Reds will be wearing a series of throwback uniforms to commemorate their 150th Anniversary and being the birthplace of professional baseball. Each weekend during a home series, the Reds will wear the uniforms from a different era to put their rich baseball history on display. Along with the Reds’ celebration, I will be reviewing and providing thoughts on each uniform throughout the season.

Reds 1911

After last night’s dominating performance in the 1902 uniforms, the Cincinnati Reds will sport their away jersey from the 1911 season. The blue and red is the signature look of our intrastate rival the Cleveland Indians, so I’m not really too high on the look our mighty Redlegs will be taking the field in for today’s afternoon game. The Reds should be red. Not blue. Red.

Not only am I not a fan of the navy blue uniforms, but it triggers me to see players like Joey Votto who should and will be lifelong Reds wearing uniforms that could be mistaken for teams like the Indians and Twins. The only saving grace is at least they’re not royal blue and red, making them look like the Cubs (but don’t worry, that’s coming).

I’m not really looking forward to anything about these jerseys, but maybe they’ll look a little better in action. I went into the 1902 jerseys thinking I’d hate them, but I ended up leaving Great American Ball Park with the hat. I doubt I will ever wear it again, but it looks cool in my blogging factory with all of the other Reds memorabilia. I don’t know that I can say the same for this hat.

The only thing keeping this uniform from being rated in the 40s is the cut. It’s a big jump to a “modern” look from the floppy collar and pocket on the 1902 uniforms. Last night, Derek Dietrich went out of his way to mix in modern style with the old school look and it ended up being pretty hilarious. If he wore his hat like this every night, it’d drive me nuts, but for some reason it tickled the funny bone since they were rocking the 1902s.

We’ll see how the uniforms look on the field, but based on what I’ve seen in the pro shop and online, I think they’re gonna leave us a little disappointed in comparison to the rest of the throwback uniforms they have in store for us.

Mac’s 150th Anniversary Throwback Rating: 62/150 – I’m not a huge fan of the C that wraps around the ‘REDS’ on the chest, but there is a definite improvement in the cut of the jersey considering the 1902 jersey’s collar and pocket. Seeing the Reds in blue doesn’t feel right, so I can’t really buy into the look as much as I’d like to. The hat doesn’t scream “Cincinnati” so outside of Reds fans or uniform aficionados, most people would think you’re wearing a Cleveland Indians hat. There are zero qualities of this jersey that I would ever want to see on a permanent look for the Cincinnati Reds
