This week saw the tenure of two iconic NCAA coaches come to an end. On Monday Thad Matta and Ohio State Athletic Director Gene Smith held a joint press conference to announce that Matta would not return to coach the Buckeyes for the 2017-2018 NCAA basketball season. Then on Wednesday Bob Stoops announced that he would be stepping down from his position as head football coach for the University of Oklahoma, effective immediately. Each coach was the winningest head coach in their school’s history for their respective sports, so both schools have some pretty big shoes to fill.
Some budding romances are a long time coming, some develop when you least expect. When I woke up Sunday morning, I didn’t think I’d be going to bed having found an NBA team to pledge my undying loyalty to, but it happened. Denver Nuggets, I would like to welcome you into my family. Make yourselves comfortable.
I live in a part of the country that is no man’s land when it comes to NBA fandom. I’m 1.5 hours east of the closest NBA team and it’s in a state I try to avoid despite growing up just minutes from our shared border. The other “logical” option would be the team in my home state of Ohio, the Cleveland Cavaliers but I cannot and will not ever root for a team from that terrible city (other than the Jake Taylor led Indians). Both teams are looking for a shot to play the well-rested Cavaliers (they’ll have had 10 days off by the time the ECF start). Tonight at 8PM, the Boston Celtics take on the Washington Wizards in a matchup for the ages.
